Overview:
This session will guide participants as they prepare to effectively take part in CU-SeeMe   videoconferences.  Teachers Connect's Town Meeting section gives the support needed to configure software and hardware.

Teachers Connect uses CU-SeeMe software for its Town Meetings and has an extensive resource area on the site. This program is intended to provide useful conferencing at minimal cost. CU-SeeMe is a free videoconferencing program and is available to anyone with a Macintosh or Windows connection to the Internet.   With CU-SeeMe, students and teachers can videoconference with another site located anywhere in the world.  By using a reflector (IP Number and sometimes a Conference ID), multiple parties at different locations can participate in a CU-SeeMe conference, each from his or her own desktop computer. With CU-SeeMe, each participant can decide to be a video sender or a receiver of video only, a lurker.  However, in this class there will be no lurkers ;-)

Assignment:

Install the video camera as directed by the instructions that came with the camera.  Most companies that produce desktop video cameras have websites where owners can download any updated drivers (ex: Logitech).  Quick Cams by Connectix/Logitech work especially well.
Download and install CU-SeeMe software.  Download the following versions. Attempt to download from linked sites before resorting to the files in eGroups.  The links below are to the eGroup files:
MAC - CU-SeeMe_0_87b3_(68K).bin or
            CU-SeeMe_0_87b3_(PPC).bin and
Stuffit to expand the compressed files - Sitex10.exe
PC -    cu-seeme.exe and readme.txt
Load and configure software.  Use the resources found in the Town Meeting section of Teachers Connect http://teachers-connect.net/town/tcpres.htm   Use the instructions for PC or MAC during installation of and configuring of the CU-SeeMe software.   There are also links to FAQs at other CU-SeeMe sites. Please note:
Video needs to be set at 160 x 120
Video needs to be set for gray scale NOT color
For Teachers Connect Town Meetings, the IP or Host Name is 209.19.87.35 and the Conference ID is 75.
This reflector is down and you will not be able to connect!  Test your setup by going to CU-SeeMe Network's reflector at 204.64.168.241 on conference 0. Please honor the rules listed in the Message Of The Day (MOTD). Conference 1 is set to self-reflect to help you adjust your video settings.
Contact the instructor if you have questions or problems setting up and connecting.
Meet at the reflector between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. to test your connection and make sure you can send and received video and chat.   Note: IP or Host Name is 209.19.87.35 and the Conference ID is 75.  If you connect properly you will see a message "MeetingPoint (tm) 3.0.6.1 (Jun 2 1998 14:35:10) Welcome to the White Pine MeetingPoint Conference Server. Global Schoolhouse at Lightspan.com Video Conferencing Center  Teachers Connect Town Meeting   http://www.teachers-connect.net Private ID 75"
Read the Town Meeting Transcripts: Ask the Expert: CU-SeeMe Videoconferencing to learn from the Guest: Bill "Squeeky" Woodland
Indicate on the poll when you have completely configured your camera and successfully connected to the reflector.
